Effects of Age on Long-Term Functional Recovery in Patients with Stroke

Abstract: Background and objectives: Age might be a determinant that limits functional recovery in patients with stroke. Here, we investigated the effect of age on functional recovery within 30 months after stroke onset. Materials and Methods: This retrospective longitudinal study enrolled 111 patients with first-ever stroke. Functional recovery was assessed at 2 weeks and at 1, 6, and 30 months after stroke onset using the modified Barthel Index (MBI), modified Rankin Score (mRS), functional ambulation category (FAC), … Show more

“…Most of the functional recovery is achieved within 3 months after onset. [ 1 5 ] During the chronic stage, functional recovery is slow and then reaches a plateau. [ 3 , 5 ] Thus, in-patient rehabilitation usually continues in the acute and subacute phases of stroke.…”

“…The values are summed across joints; a score of 100 indicates the absence of any impairment. Functional disability was assessed using the Korean version of the Modified Barthel Index (MBI) [ 16 , 17 ]. Patients were classified as having spatial neglect when they showed typical clinical behavior such as (i) spontaneous deviation of the head and eyes toward the ipsilesional side, (ii) orienting toward the ipsilesional side when addressed from the front or the left, and (iii) ignoring of contralesionally located people or objects [ 18 , 19 ].…”

“…In addition, according to recent studies, the gender issue, i.e., that the female sex would worsen the outcome of stroke, has emerged as an important issue for recovery and predicting long-term outcomes for stroke [24][25][26][27]. Moreover, age, particularly aged 70 years or older, reported a negative impact on the 30-month outcomes of stroke [16]. Thus, a large-scale prospective longitudinal study for EVT with several clinical factors on the functional outcome would be needed to address the remaining questions.…”

“…All rehabilitation programs began within 5 days after onset. Treatment continued until 6 months after onset and consisted of both physical (neurodevelopmental treatment approach) and occupational (task-orientated approach) therapy for 1-2 h per day, 5 days per week [9,16]. Speech therapy was provided as needed.…”
