Effects of Alcohol on Rotary Pursuit Performance: A Gender Comparison

Abstract: For 6 days, 10 male and 10 female social drinkers performed a rotary pursuit task six times across each day under both placebo and alcohol-intoxicated conditions. Following a training period, O.35g/kg of alcohol or placebo beverages were administered 45 min before the second, third, and fourth sessions each day. In general, alcohol impaired the rotary pursuit performance of women more than that of men despite similar peak BAC levels. Results suggest no evidence of acute tolerance, evidenced by similar performa… Show more

“…One study even suggests that, while men develop tolerance to the motor effects of alcohol, women become sensitized to these effects over time (Dougherty et al, 1998). These findings are not surprising given that women achieve higher blood alcohol levels than men with similar doses, and develop alcohol-related physical illnesses at lower alcohol exposure levels than men (see Glenn (1993), Nixon (1994) and Nolen-Hoeksema (2004) for reviews of alcohol effects in women).…”

“…Adult women appear to suffer more from the negative motor and cognitive deficits resulting from drinking in comparison to men (Nixon, 1994). Dougherty, Bjork, and Bennett (1998) conducted a study in which male and female participants consumed either three placebo or alcoholic beverages on six consecutive days. After ingestion, participants performed a rotary pursuit task.…”

“…This procedure reflects "real world" alcohol consumption more accurately than does delivery of a single (typically large) bolus dose of alcohol and allows for examination of performance with increasing BrACs in a single day (Dougherty et al, 1998a(Dougherty et al, , 1999a. Each alcohol dose contained 0.20 g of 95% alcohol/kg of body weight (with adjustments for the specific gravity of alcohol).…”
