Effects of Aloe vera leaf gel extract on rat peritonitis model

Abstract: Objectives:The aim of this study was to investigate the antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant activities and probable toxic effects of Aloe vera (AV) in a rat peritonitis model.Materials and Methods:Rats were divided into five groups: (1) Control group, (2) AV group, (3) peritonitis group (P), (4) peritonitis + AV group (P + AV), and (5) peritonitis + antibiotherapy group (P + Ab). Ultrafiltration (UF) rates were determined and colony and leukocyte counts were calculated in the dialysate. Glucose, … Show more

“…This anti-inflammatory effect could also be demonstrated in Wistar rats with induced peritoneal Staphylococcus aureus infection: Aloe gel extract alone increased the liberation of IL-1 β and, as expected, infected animals exhibited increased IL-1 β -levels. However, when the infected rats were treated with Aloe gel extract, the liberation of IL-1 β decreased to normal values again [ 37 ].…”

“…Povidiultane-iodine (PVPI) was also compared to lavage with 0.9% saline solution, which was positive 3 . Among plants, the extract of Aloe vera and Euphorbia tirucalli latex were objects of study in peritoneal lavage in an experimental model 18,19 . However, no studies were found with the fruit water of Cocus nucifera L., although its medicinal properties have already been evaluated 9,11,12,20 .…”

“…Altincik et al reported no toxic effects from the application of aloe vera gel to peritoneal surfaces and in a rat peritonitis model also demonstrated an anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory effect of aloe vera [22].…”

“…Aloe vera possesses many pharmacological properties, including anti-inflammatory, immune-stimulant, wound healing, and antitumor, which could be involved in the mediation of ROS levels [21]. It has been claimed that aloe vera protects against pro-oxidant-induced membrane and cellular damage [22].…”
