Effects of Anions on Corrosion Inhibition by Organic Compounds

Abstract: The effects of inorganic anions, organic compounds, and combinations of the two on corrosion of mild steel in various acids were determined. From corrosion rates of steel in acids the order of the degree of adsorption of anions was concluded to be I−>Br−>Cl−>SO4=>ClO4− The largest effects on corrosion mitigation were observed for I− and I− in combination with amines. The specificity of effects attributable to I− suggests a strong interaction with the steel surface possibly through chemisorption. The enhancemen… Show more

“…So, there are electrostatic interactions between negatively charged surface and positively charged atoms, which retard the anodic dissolution of iron (Aramaki et al, 1987). Secondly, according to the donor-acceptor interaction concept , -electrons of the benzene rings and the double bond of the oleate derivative (TN 15 L) in the inhibitor molecules can interact with vacant d-orbital of the metal surface (Hackerman et al, 1966).Thirdly, the polyethylene glycol groups of nonionic chains can adsorb on the metal surface through H-bonding, involving the displacement of water molecules from the metal surface. Lastly, the neutral parts of the molecules can then adsorb, onto metal surface when free surface areas are available. From Table 1, it is seen that at low concentration of the different inhibitors, i.e.…”

“…Some anions are found to enhance the inhibitive effect of several nitrogen containing organic compounds in acid solutions [14][15][16][17] . In the present paper the influence of SCN -ions on the inhibitive performance of arylazo indole compounds has been studied using weight loss technique.…”
