Effects of aqueous and dietary exposure of dieldrin on survival, growth and bioconcentration in mallard ducklings

Abstract: Tests were conducted to determine the effects of dieldrin in continuous flow water and in food on survival, growth, and bioconcentration in mallard ducklings (Anas platyrhynchos) Di eldrin had no effect on survival or growth at concentrations at or below water saturation (0 2 mg/L), but tissue (lipid, skin, liver, muscle, brain, blood) dieldrin concentrations increased rapidly (up to a mean of 217 μg/g) and bioconcentration factors (BCFs) showed up to 1,995 times (mean steady state lipid BCF of 1,345) more die… Show more

“…The maximum concentrations of heptachlor epoxide for all adult birds (398.51 ng/g wet weight) and the great grebe egg (75.77 ng/g wet weight) were below those values reported (1500 ng/g wet weight) to adversely affect reproduction in the American kestrel, Falco sparverius (Henny et al, 1983;Henny et al, 1984). Methoxychlor, lindane and endosulfan contaminations were also under the concentrations reported to harm birds (WHO, 1984(WHO, , 1991Nebeker et al, 1992;Sang et al, 1999;Eroschenko et al, 2002;EXTOXNET, 2006).…”

“…Dieldrin is considered a persistent organic pollutant and has been shown to be toxic to humans and animals. Exposure to dieldrin has been associated with neurological, developmental, and carcinogenic effects in animal models (Nebeker et al 1992;Bachowski et al 1998;Richardson et al 2006). Dieldrin residues have been detected in adipose tissue of sheep, ducks, cows, and swine (Corrigan and Seneviratna 1990;Falandysz and Kannan 1992;and Petterson 1997).…”

“…Misuse of pyrethroids insecticides could cause toxicity in non-target species (Cantalamessa, 1993). Insecticides exposure constitutes a source of potent hazard especially in children and animals (Eisler, 1989;Nebeker et al, 1992;Menegaux et al, 2006). The multipurpose insect killer used, a pyrethroid insecticide product, is a popular brand for the eradication of mosquito in households in Nigeria and in some cases, it is used daily in homes.…”
