Effects of arachidonate on cultured pig thyroid cells and their stimulation by thyrotropin

Abstract: 1. Introduction ture at 37°C in 95% air-5% CO2 water-satured atmosphere with or without TSH. Arachidonate has been reported to interfere in complex fashion with the metabolism of the dog thyroid gland [l]. As in numerous other tissues arachidonate stimulates prostaglandin synthesis but with a low conversion rate. Moreover, in thyroid it depresses the accumulation of cyclic AMP induced by TSH. Arachidonate inhibits the thyroid secretion stimulated by low concentrations of TSH but enhances the iodination of prot… Show more

“…A previous analysis has shown variations of annexin content under activation of the adenylate cyclase system by TSH [16]. TSH introduction to thyroid cells in vitro induces thyroid hormone biosynthesis (shown by an increase in protein-binding iodine) [24]. This hormonal neosynthesis does not lead to a decrease in the annexin content as expected from in vivo experiments.…”

“…In thyroid, the arachidonate liberated by the TSH action on specific PI phospholipases [3-61, which is a substrate for cycle-oxygenase and lipoxygenase [3,7-91, modulates phospholipid metabolism [ 1] and the iodination process [ 1, lo].…”
