“…17 These studies suggest that inhaled particles induce systemic oxidative stress, 18 inflammation, 19,20 autonomic dysfunction, including tachycardia, reductions in heart rate variability and hypertension, 18,[20][21][22] and hypercoagulability. 23,24 Therefore, the particulate matter contained in AD may stimulate plaque rupture according to these mechanisms, resulting in AMI.…”

“…This mechanism stimulates lymphocytes, dendritic cells, and granulocytes, including the recruitment of neutrophils, resulting in acute inflammation. Pathologically for pneumonia, desert dust particles enhance the neutrophil number dose-dependently, as well as the expression of cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, IL-12, IFN-γ, TNF-α) and chemokines (KC, MCP-1, MCP-3, MIP-1α) in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid [138,[145][146][147][148]. These results suggest that the exacerbation of pneumonia by desert dust was due to the enhanced production of pro-inflammatory mediators via activation of TLR2 and NALP3 inflammasome pathways in alveolar macrophages [149].…”

“…Amorphous and crystalline silica (SiO 2 ) [31][32][33][34][35][36], as well as ASD [9,10,[37][38][39][40] have been reported to cause inflammatory responses and damage with the release of inflammatory cytokines including IL-6 and TNF and with the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the lungs of experimental animals. Si was the major inorganic chemical element in the ASD tested in this study, which was derived from quartz and feldspar [28].…”
