Effects of BDE-85 on the Oxidative Status and Nerve Conduction in Rodents

Abstract: BDE-85 is a congener of a class of flame-retardant compounds called polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). Although there are some studies on other congeners of PBDEs, there are none on the toxicity potential of this penta-BDE member. This study, therefore, reports the oxidative status and sciatic nerve conduction properties following BDE-85 treatment in rodents. The oxidative stress markers, lipid hydroperoxides, and the activities of antioxidant enzymes, namely superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxi… Show more

“…There are reports on rats showing decreased antioxidative enzymes in brain tissue during BDE-99 indicating that not all congeners have the same impact on the tissues. Another observation made by the authors (MCV) is BDE-209 is much less toxic compared to BDE-85 [60].…”

“…Previous work [ 13 ] has shown that PBDEs and their metabolites have influence on adrenosteroid production in H295R adrenocortical cancer cells, but the study on their toxicities and thermal decomposition is restricted. BDE-47 and BDE-85 are the two congeners of PBDEs [ 20 ]. BDE-47 is one of the most common congeners, but has not been examined for carcinogenicity in model systems [ 21 ].…”
