Effects of Bentonite Additives on Autoclaved Sand-Lime Product Properties

Abstract: Abstract. The paper presents the results of the research on modifications of sand-lime bricks with bentonite additives. The article presents correlations between physico-mechanical properties and a microstructure of traditional silicates and products modified with bentonite. Numerous images of scanning electron microscopy included in the article show the internal structure and phases occurring in both traditional and modified sand -lime products. The addition of bentonite results in a reduction of sand-lime pr… Show more

“…Research on the modi cations subject and the reduction of compressive strength of lime-sand bricks is more and more often encountered [5][6][7]. The modi cation itself of lime-sand products with recycled glass in various forms [8][9][10][11], as well as modi cation with waste materials [12][13][14][15] is already known in literature and practice.…”

“…One of the effective ways of modifying sand-lime products in terms of improving their strength parameters is the use of ground mineral additives with a high specific surface area, pozzolanic and/or hydraulic properties, in the raw material mixture. An example of such a solution is the use of ground chalcedonite [ 24 , 25 ], ground limestone [ 26 ], dolomite powder [ 27 ], metakaolinite [ 28 ], barium [ 29 ], bentonite [ 30 ], thermally activated Carboniferous shale [ 31 ] and silica fume [ 32 ]. In recent years, the impact of waste glass in silicates has been extensively studied [ 33 , 34 , 35 , 36 , 37 ].…”

“…The current research on changing the composition of the sand-lime products is mainly aimed at improving compressive strength or their acoustic properties. The fillers used in the mass of such products included components of both natural [ 16 , 17 ] and chemical origin [ 18 , 19 ]. However, recycled products [ 20 , 21 ], polypropylene mesh [ 22 ], other production wastes and leachate from landfills [ 23 , 24 ] were also taken into account.…”
