Effects of binary particle size distribution on the fluid dynamic behavior of fluidized, vibrated and vibrofluidized beds

Abstract: -In this work the effects of particle size distribution on the dynamics and segregation patterns in fluidized, vibrated and vibrofluidized beds were investigated. A binary particle size distribution and a reference one composed of glass spheres with a mean Sauter diameter of 2.18×10 -3 m were tested. The experimental setup consisted basically of a circular glass chamber with a height of 0.50 m and a diameter of 0.114 m, operated in the fluidized bed mode ( = 0.00), in either vibrated or vibrofluidized bed mode… Show more

“…On the other hand, segregation by fluidization is needed to separate one solid phase from another used in a variety of industrial agricultural, mining, and waste management applications. Variations in either particle density, angularity, restitution coefficients or particle size give rise to segregation [68][69][70][71][72][73][74][75].We will here limit ourselves to segregation by size.…”

“…Even in dry vibrofluidized beds, defining fundamental parameters such as the minimum fluidization velocity or stable pressure drop is controversial, because their characteristic curves do not necessarily present similar patterns to those observed in conventional fluidized beds [1,[4][5][6]. Therefore, the design of a VFBD and selection of operating conditions involves a considerable amount of empirical expertise.…”
