Effects of Body Weight Reduction on Serum Irisin and Metabolic Parameters in Obese Subjects

Abstract: BackgroundIrisin is a myokine implicated in lipid and glucose metabolism. The objective of this study is to examine the effect of a body weight reduction on the serum irisin level and physical indicators in obese Japanese patients without diabetes.MethodsThe subjects were 22 patients (male/female, 5/17; age, 46.1±16.0 years; body mass index [BMI], 36.9±5.0 kg/m2) who completed a 6-month body weight reduction program at our clinic. The program included diet, exercise therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy. Bl… Show more

“…Skeletal muscle is considered an endocrine organ, and secretes various myokines such as irisin and IL‐6 . Irisin, induced by exercise, involves peroxisome proliferator‐activated receptor α signaling and plays a crucial role in fatty acid beta‐oxidation in the liver, which leads to improvement of hepatic steatosis and insulin sensitivity with upregulation of fibroblast growth factor 21 . Therefore, skeletal muscle may play a causative role in developing or improving NAFLD by secreting favorable myokines.…”

“…(41)(42)(43) Irisin, induced by exercise, involves peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α signaling and plays a crucial role in fatty acid beta-oxidation in the liver, which leads to improvement of hepatic steatosis and insulin sensitivity with upregulation of fibroblast growth factor 21. (44)(45)(46) Therefore, skeletal muscle may play a causative role in developing or improving NAFLD by secreting favorable myokines. Furthermore, physical activity provides a link between relative skeletal muscle and NAFLD, as low muscle mass leads to physical disability, which reduces energy expenditures, increases obesity, and leads to hepatic steatosis.…”

“…Circulating myonectin linking skeletal muscle to lipid metabolism in the liver and adipose tissue provides insights into tissue cross-talk that underlies the integrated control of whole-body metabolism [28]. Hepatoprotective IL-6 [29] and irisin [30] are further reported to improve hepatic steatosis [31].…”

“…Irizine, according to the authors, could be a therapeutic agent for the treatment of metabolic disorders and other diseases that can be controlled with exercise [161]. This discovery caused a stormy but very contradictory reaction in the scientific and medical community: from total enthusiasm in connection with the emergence of another "panacea" for the treatment of obesity to declaring all the beneficial effects of irisin described above as a myth [162][163][164][165].…”
