An extensive use of ICT is a key feature in the development of next generation smart grids. The ability of the ICT system to meet the real time requirements of the powers system, even when it is degraded due to failures, is essential. This simultaneous study of dependability (reliability) and performance are referred to as performability.This paper presents a method for a performability study on ICT support system of smart grid. It looks into how performance associated properties (timing failures) can be modelled together with properties affecting dependability such as omission or conventional component failures. A two tier model using ns-3 and SAN is developed to study the peformability of an IEC 61850 based communication infrastructure for a protection application. For illustration, a simulation is conducted to study the reliability and unavailability of an IEC 61850 based communication architecture, where the impact of both timing failures and omission failures are investigated and compared. The result revealed that the availability and reliability is highly dependent on the requirements for the protection application, maximum delay per packet and maximum number of consecutive delayed packets the protection application can tolerate. It also shows that timing failures have a higher impact than omission failures for a protection application with shorter time requirement.

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructures play a key role in the evolution from traditional power systems to Smart Grids. Increasingly fluctuating power flows, sparked by the transition towards sustainable energy generation, become a major issue for power grid stability. To deal with this challenge, future Smart Grids require precise monitoring and control, which in turn demand for reliable, real-time capable and cost-efficient communications.For this purpose, we propose applying Software-Defined Networking (SDN) to handle the manifold requirements of Smart Grid communications. To achieve reliability, our approach encompasses fast recovery after failures in the communication network and dynamic service-aware network (re-)configuration. Network Calculus (NC) logic is embedded into our SDN controller for meeting latency requirements imposed by the standard IEC 61850 of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). Thus, routing provides delay-optimal paths under consideration of existing cross traffic. Also, continuous latency bound compliance is ensured by combining NC delay supervision with means of flexible reconfiguration. For evaluation we consider the well-known Nordic 32 test system, on which we map a corresponding communication network in both experiment and emulation. The described functionalities are validated, employing $ c 2018. This manuscript version is made available under the CC-BY-NC-ND 4.0 license http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/. The formal version of this publication is realistic IEC 61850 transmissions and distributed control traffic. Our results show that hard service guarantees can be ensured with the help of the proposed SDN solution. On this basis, we derive extremely time critical services, which must not be subjected to flexible reconfiguration. Smart Grid Communication Use CasesSmart Grid communication requirements can be roughly divided into distribution and transmission grid use cases, as detailed below. While these power system levels exhibit widely diverging demands, SDN offers an integrated approach for associated communications. Managing the Distribution Power GridCommunication-dependent applications in the distribution power grid comprise Automated Meter Reading (AMR), DSM, monitoring and control of Distributed Energy Resources (DER), as well as coordination of EV charging. AMR is considered a fundamental function of smart distribution grids, providing measurement data as the basis for more advanced applications, such as novelty detection power meters [11]. For this concept machine learning is deployed on distributed energy measurement data to optimize the energy consumption times of end users. Modern power systems, referred to as cyber-physical energy systems (CPESs), are complex systems with strong interdependencies between power and information and communication technology (ICT) systems. CPESs also have dependencies between the essential grid services. For instance, coordinated voltage control depends on state estimation, which depends on measurement acquisition. Due to the high relevance of these grid services for operating CPESs, assessing their performance is crucial for assessing the performance of a CPES. Most of these grid services are so-called ICT-enabled grid services, which means that they rely to a high degree on ICT. Accordingly, properties such as availability, correctness and timeliness, which depend on the involved software, hardware and data of the ICT system, must be considered for assessing the performance of an ICT-enabled grid service. Disturbances and repair actions in CPESs impact these properties, which can then propagate and affect the performance of a grid service as well as other dependent grid services. There is, therefore, a need for the ability to model the influence of the properties of software, hardware and data on ICT-enabled grid services for single services as well as across several services, resulting in a propagation of these parameters. This paper proposes a meta model for assessing the performance of ICT-enabled grid services, which can be instantiated for different grid services considering their dependencies. A multi-dimensional operational state space, which serves as a visualisation of the performance of grid services in terms of their state trajectory, is also proposed in this paper. These contributions enable new possibilities for planning and vulnerability analyses: property changes in parts of the ICT system can be simulated to investigate their consequences throughout the ICT-enabled grid services. This is demonstrated by a case study with a state estimation service considering an exemplary CPES and scenarios with disturbances. The performance of this state estimation service considering the disturbances is then investigated using the proposed meta model, and the change in performance is visualised as trajectories in the proposed operational state space.
