Effects of Ca2+ Concentration on Anaerobic Ammonium Oxidation Reactor Microbial Community Structure

Abstract: The anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) reaction removes nitrogen from wastewater, the performance of which is influenced by Ca2+; however, the effect of Ca2+ on microbial community structure is unclear. Therefore, the effects of Ca2+ concentration on the treatment performance of an anammox reactor and microbial community structure of anammox sludge were investigated. Ca2+ concentration minimally influenced the removal efficiency of NO2−–N and NH4+–N, but substantially influenced total N removal. Changing t… Show more

“…Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) was carried out on CMBR sludge samples to characterize microbial populations. A DGGE map can distinguish microorganisms at the genus level; moreover, bright and faint bands in the gel can be interpreted as dominant and inferior microorganism populations, respectively [26]. As shown in Figure 5a, the dominant CMBR microorganism populations are represented by bands 4 and 5, with a total share of 52% (Figure 5c).…”

“…Currently, seven genera and 26 species of Candidatus (Brocadia, Kuenenia, Jettenia, Scalindua, Anammoxoglobus, Anammoximicrobium, and Brasilis) have been identified [26]. Details on the diversity of anammox microorganisms are presented in Table 1 [27][28][29]. Ca.…”

“…The experiments were designed accordingly. After a period of culture, the resulting 28 N2, 29 N2, and 30 N2 concentrations were measured by a membrane-sampling mass spectrometer, isotope ratio mass spectrometer, or gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Through calculation, we can judge whether there is an anammox reaction and its reaction rate [21].…”
