Effects of caffeine consumption on intraocular pressure during low‐intensity endurance exercise: A placebo‐controlled, double‐blind, balanced crossover study

Abstract: Importance Intraocular pressure (IOP) is sensitive to caffeine intake and physical exercise. However, the combined effect of caffeine intake and physical exercise on IOP levels remains unknown. Background We aimed to assess the effects of caffeine consumption before exercise on the IOP behaviour during low‐intensity endurance exercise. Design A placebo‐controlled, double‐blind, balanced crossover study at the University of Granada. Participants Eighteen physically active young adults (age = 23.3 ± 2.4 years) p… Show more

“…This highlights the need of lifestyle advice for glaucoma patients. This may support the use of telemetry for continuous monitoring of IOP variations in borderline glaucoma cases to help physicians weigh the advantages of early surgical intervention against the patient's "normal" daily activities [133][134][135][136][137]. However, it would be necessary to ascertain how surgical treatments might affect IOP changes away from the office.…”

“…At present, the enhancement approaches which can improve sustained attention include biochemical intervention, behavioral training, and physical stimulation intervention (Dresler et al, 2018). However, the effect of long-term consumption of biochemical agents (e.g., caffeine) will decline over time, and some side effects occur, such as interference in sleep and withdrawal difficulties (Ning et al, 2019; Vera et al, 2020). For behavioral training, the intervention cycles required are excessively long, and determining a causal relationship between behavioral training and improved attention is difficult (Wang & He, 2020).…”
