Effects of Chemical Protective Clothing on Task Performance Using Wearable Input Devices

Abstract: Wearable computers allow users the freedom to work in any environment including hazardous environments that may require protective clothing. Past research has shown that protective clothing interferes with manual materials handling tasks, medical tasks, and manual dexterity tasks. However, little information exists regarding how protective clothing affects task performance with wearable input devices. As a result, a study was conducted to address this issue and offer recommendations to enhance the compatibilit… Show more

“…Chemical protective clothing (CPC) is worn by the first responders to protect them from exposure to potentially hazardous solvents, materials, and chemical agents. The components of a typical CPC are: a gas mask with respirator; a protective hood that covers the head and shoulders; a suit; rubber protective gloves; and rubber over boots (Krausman, 2005). A major concern about current neutron detectors is the degree to which CPC degrades task performance.…”

“…CPC has been shown to impose a physiological and psychological burden that can degrade performance (Arad et al, 1993). For example, the gas mask may increase breathing resistance, restrict field-of-view, and interfere with speech intelligibility (Krausman, 2005). The protective suit often causes heat stress and subjective discomfort during continuous operation in hot and humid conditions (Arad et al, 1993).…”
