Effects of chronic low- and high-dose ethanol intake on the nitrergic relaxations of corpus cavernosum and penile nitric oxide synthase in the rabbit

Abstract: Epidemiological evidence showed that chronic ethanol consumption is a major risk factor in the development of impotence. The present study investigated the effects of carbachol-, electrical field stimulation (EFS)-, sodium nitroprusside (SNP)-and papaverine-induced relaxant responses in the isolated corpus cavernosum tissues from rabbits submitted to an 12-week course of chronic low (5% v/v) or high ethanol intake (30% v/v). Increased carbachol-and EFS-induced relaxant responses but not SNP and papaverine, wer… Show more

“…Um dado que também chama a atenção no mecanismo da disfunção sexual induzida pelo álcool foi verificado por Yazir Y et al (2012), sugerindo que a redução do óxido nítrico no corpo cavernoso seria pelo menos em parte relacionada com a disfunção erétil em estudo com animais em laboratórios.…”

“…In previously published animal models, we also studied with different kind of animal species and develop animal models that are closely reflect the disease scenario similar to pathologies seen in humans (diabetes model, ageing, alcoholic animal models, polymicrobial sepsis model). We characterized the effects of different drugs in terms of their effectiveness, safety and tolerability in the Balb/c mouce, Wistar albino rats and rabbit models [20][21][22][23][24] .…”

“…There is some experimental evidence in animal models to support a causal link between alcohol and ED (Aydinoglu et al, 2008; Leite et al, 2017; Lizarte et al, 2009; Tiraboschi et al, 2021; Yazir et al, 2012). Corpora cavernosa (CC) isolated from mice, rats or rabbits chronically exposed to alcohol show an impaired relaxation to acetylcholine or other muscarinic receptor agonists which stimulate the endothelium to release nitric oxide (NO) (Aydinoglu et al, 2008; Lizarte et al, 2009; Yazir et al, 2012).…”

The relaxant response of CC to electrical field stimulation (EFS), which induces the release of NO from nitrergic nerves, that is, an in vitro correlate of penile erection, also has been observed to be impaired in some models of chronic exposure to alcohol (Yazir et al, 2012).…”
