Effects of cigarette smoking on erectile dysfunction

Abstract: Summary Cigarette smoking is a leading cause of preventable morbidity and mortality in the United States. Although public policies have resulted in a decreased number of new smokers, smoking rates remain stubbornly high in certain demographics with 20% of all American middle aged men smoking. “…Smoking has previously been linked with erectile dysfunction [34], probably mediating its effects via microvascular circulatory impairment, although the mechanism in women has not been well studied. “…In another review examining the effect of smoking on ED, the risk caused by smoking in the development of ED was found to be higher in smokers compared to age and comorbidities. As a result of several studies, it has been concluded that smoking worsens erectile functions by disrupting vascular mechanisms (Kovac, Labbate, Ramasamy, Tang, & Lipshultz, ). The present study is in support of this data and similarly demonstrates high RDW levels are associated with ED.…”

“…The coronary artery tone is also influenced by smoking, which impacts the coagulation mechanisms dependent on nitric oxide. In animal models, it was found that chronic smoking can potentially cause an ageindependent high blood pressure with a significant decline in nitric oxide synthesis in the penis [16] .…”
