Effects of circadian cortisol on the development of a health habit.

Abstract: The present findings suggest that the time course of the development of healthy habits depends on the time of the day and that the effect is mediated through diurnal variation in cortisol levels. Future studies are now needed to determine to what extent cortisol rhythmicity can help individuals to adopt new health behaviors. (PsycINFO Database Record

“…In line with previous research (Lally et al, 2010;Fournier et al, 2017), the current (aggregated) data provided support for the asymptotic contribution of repeated goal-congruent behavior performance to the formation of habit. Unfortunately, we were unable to show this trend on the individual level, due to the biweekly assessment of habit strength.…”

“…Although research on habit formation is still in its infancy, recent studies have uncovered some of the mechanisms that underlie the habit formation process. One of the main findings is that the habit formation process within individuals unfolds asymptotically (Lally et al, 2010;Fournier et al, 2017). That is, habit strength increases steeply at first, and then levels off.…”

“…The relationship between life habits and levels of immunological and neuroendocrine biomarkers, including the stress hormone cortisol, in adolescents seems to be important to objectively comprehend their health and well-being in school life. Particularly, cortisol is believed to have a role in habit formation (Fournier et al 2017). To our knowledge, there have been only a few studies (Chun et al 2018;Hunter et al 2018) that investigated the relationship between life habits, that are related to smartphone use and sleep, and corti-sol levels in adolescents, even though the lifestyle and hormone levels are dramatically changed in growth and development during puberty (Benyi and Savendahl 2017).…”

“…Scientific evidence shows no perfect time of day to exercise, but the rhythmicity of circadian cortisol may support morning exercise as the optimal time for development of healthy exercise habits. 9 Historically, TC masters advocate that TC is a great way to start and end your day. 3,4 In truth, all exercise works best at a time that is best for you, but simplified TC basic moves can readily be put into daily routines and become mindful, functional and restorative practice habits.…”
