Effects of climate change on pearl millet (<i>Pennisetum glaucum</i> [L. R. Br.]) production in Nigeria

Abstract: This paper attempts to examine the relationship between climate change and pearl millet production in Nigeria. It discusses the origin, distribution of the species with some of their properties including production constraints in the Sub Saharan Africa and Nigeria in particular. Northern states of Nigeria were found to be the dominant producers of pearl millets with Sokoto state having a total cultivated area of 747,580ha. Pearl millet was also found to be the major crop amongst others, useful for minimizing t… Show more

“…When the sensed readings match the threshold values in Table 2, the sensor-based DAS displays the crop that will grow. Table 2: Threshold sensor values for specific crops to grow in Nigeria [19,20,21,22,23,24,25,26]. For instance, if the values acquired from the sensors align with the threshold range values required for cassava to grow, which is 60%-70% for moisture, 25°c -35°c for temperature, 4.5-7.0 for soil pH, 60%-90% humidity, it displays cassava alongside the acquired soil parameters else, it only shows the obtained soil parameters.…”

“…Recent demographic projections suggest that to feed the growing population, global agricultural production needs to increase by 60% to 100% by 2050; thus, in SSA, such production levels require investment in agriculture [7]. On the other hand, recent climate-change impact trends suggest that major cereal crop production in SSA could decrease by some 20% by mid-century [8][9][10]. Therefore, scientific research on pearl millet is needed to ensure sustainable production and bolster the food security levels in arid and semi-arid SSA regions amid climate change.…”

“…Millet is the crop that is "still" capable of growing and producing food seeds, in agroclimatic conditions where any other cereal would fail (Daouda Ousmane, 2017;Varshney et al, 2017;Kadri et al, 2019). It is the cereal proven to be the main crop to minimize the adverse effects of climate change in arid and semi-arid zones (Azare et al, 2020). Millet is almost exclusively grown under strict rainfed conditions, in the Sahelian zone where there is only one rainy season.…”
