Effects of clover root weevil and moisture stress on subterranean, balansa, Persian, arrowleaf and white clovers

Abstract: The effect on plant growth of clover root weevil (CRW) larval feeding on nodules and roots was examined for the annual clovers, subterranean cv. Leura, balansa cv. Bolta, arrowleaf cv. Arrowtas and Persian cv. Mihi, and white clover cv. Tribute. Mini-swards of each clover species were used in a glasshouse experiment, with half of these exposed to CRW larval feeding. Keywords: Sitona lepidus, root herbivory, annual clovers, drought

“…Within Trifolium spp. it feeds on white clover (T. repens), red clover (T. pratense), strawberry clover (T. fragiferum), alsike clover (T. hybridum), caucasian clover (T. ambiguum), crimson clover (T. incarnatum), subterranean clover (T. subterraneum), suckling clover (T. dubium), clustered clover (T. glomeratum) and striated clover (T. striata) (Murray 1996a;Hardwick 1998;Crush et al 2007Crush et al , 2008.…”

“…Seedling survival of all annual clovers tested was not significantly affected by CRW. Dryland pastures with established annual clovers are relatively tolerant to CRW larval damage, and CRW populations are severely limited by summer drought (Crush et al 2008), so it is likely that CRW is not a problem for establishment of these clovers in dryland sites.…”

“…Sitona lepidus feeds only on Trifolium spp. with a strong preference for white clover (Murray & Clements, 1994; Crush et al , 2008). In keeping with the trends observed with invasive populations of S. discoideus in lucerne (Goldson et al , 1986), S. lepidus larval survival has been found to increase linearly with increasing availability of root nodules, which provide food and protection for the vulnerable first instar larvae (Gerard, 2001).…”
