Effects of combining feedback and hypothesis-testing on the quality of simulated child sexual abuse interviews with avatars among Chinese university students

Abstract: Previous research has shown that simulation training using avatars with repeated feedback improves child sexual abuse interview quality. The present study added a hypothesis-testing intervention and examined if the combination of two interventions, feedback and hypothesis-testing, would improve interview quality compared to no intervention and to either intervention alone. Eighty-one Chinese university students were randomly assigned to a control, feedback, hypothesis-testing, or the combination of feedback an… Show more

“…that a child has been abused), interviewers are urged to explicitly pose and investigate alternative hypotheses about the origin of the allegation (e.g. the statement is mistaken or fabricated) and other aspects of the surrounding situation (Zhang et al, 2023). In this way, interviewers are seeking to practise in a way that is 'consciously objective' (Lacey & Nunkoosing, 2022).…”

“…Finally, there is a significant amount of emerging research reviewing of the use of digital technology innovations to support interviewers. These innovations include learning opportunities using simulations and avatars (Haginoya et al, 2023;Hassan et al, 2022;Krause et al, 2017;Pompedda et al, 2015Pompedda et al, , 2022Salehi et al, 2022;Zhang et al, 2023) as well as self-paced or short training modules (Casey & Powell, 2022;Yan et al, 2023), all of which can be repeated and provide feedback. One even tested an automated question classification system within an avatar interview (Haginoya et al, 2023).…”
