Effects of continuous UV-irradiation on the antioxidant activities of quercetin and rutin in solution in the presence of lecithin as the protective target

Abstract: The stabilities and antioxidant action of two selected flavonoids, quercetin and rutin, dissolved in methanol and water, toward continuous UV--irradiation from three different sub-ranges (UV-A, UV-B and UV-C) were studied. The flavonoids underwent degradation (bleaching) following first-order kinetics. The bleaching rates were highly dependent on the energy input of the involved UV-photons. The antioxidant activities of the two flavonoids on UV-induced lecithin lipid peroxidation were studied by the thiobarbit… Show more

“…[36][37][38] Thus, quercetin may provide protection against UV radiation either through absorption (preventive, inhibition mode) or scavenging activities ("chain-breaking", antioxidant mode). 47 The system studied in this work was more complex compared to the previous one 46 due to the presence of benzophenone. 29,40,41 In the latter case, quercetin (as well as other flavonoids) scavenges already created free radicals (such as lipid peroxy radicals, LOO • , or some ROS species present), mostly by the hydrogen-atom-transfer mechanism, shown in Eq.…”

“…However, flavonoids can also act as free radical scavengers to prevent oxidative skin damage [32][33][34][35] and their topical application has met with considerable interest. 45 In a recent publication, 46 the stabilities of two flavonoid components, quercetin and rutin, in solution toward UV-irradiation (from the three sub-ranges, UV-A, UV-B and UV-C), as well as their antioxidant activities in the presence of a lipoidal mixture (i.e., lecithin), as the "protection target", were compared. In the former case, the absorbed UV energy may be dissipated as heat 39 or converted into quercetin decomposition products, both in vitro and in vivo.…”

“…Quercetin (QCT), a representative of a larger flavone family (3, 3' ,4' ,5,7-pentahydroxyflavone), is well known for its antioxidant properties (Cvetković et al 2011;Zvezdanović et al 2012). It is known that the flavonoid molecule localizes either in the hydrophobic region or in the polar region of the lipid bilayers, depending on hydrogen bonding of the hydroxyl groups (Košinova et al 2012).…”

“…However, in the case of olive and privet extracts, it is likely that their constituents, such as secoiridoids, are highly unstable compounds in the presence of the destructive effects of UV radiation (Bruneton, 1999). Additionally, flavonoids are also distinguished by a greater sensitivity to UV radiation (Cvetković et al, 2011). The antioxidant activity of olive leaf extracts has never been investigated in UV-irradiated fibroblasts.…”
