hile skills-based approaches to basic counselling training dominate the field, they have been criticised W on four counts: (a) lack of evidence as to effectiveness in improving interview performance, (b) lack of evidence of skills retention and transfer, (c) failure to take into account trainees' individual differences in counselling aptitude, and (d) failure to take into account trainees' underlying cognitive structures and processes. A review of the literature suggests that the first two criticisms can be rejected and that there is insufficient empirical evidence at present to support the other two. Some guidelines for counselling skills training are suggested. I am very appreciative of the advice given by Christopher Sharpley, Monash University, on meta-analysis procedures. The counselor training literature suggests that the two most accepted models for counselor supervision are the psychotherapeutic and the behavioral‐skills mastery approaches. A third model, cognitive‐behavioral, is showing promise in the research literature. In this article, the authors present research supporting the cognitive‐behavioral model, as well as a conceptual and procedural base for defining and implementing a cognitive‐behavioral supervision approach. Descriptions are provided for three supervision techniques (i.e., mental practice, covert modeling, and cognitive modeling) and three supervision interventions (i.e., cognitive restructuring, cognitive self‐instruction, and cognitive self‐management).

Although much has been written about technique and strategy, patient characteristics, and outcomes of hypnotherapy, relatively little has been written about the characteristics of successful hypnotherapists (Lazar & Dempster, 1984). Whereas successful hypnotherapists have all of the qua12 ities of successful psychotherapists, they also have a number of distinguishing qualities relevant to the practice of hypnosis. In this chapter I identify therapist variables that contribute to successful hypnotherapy. Before I consider characteristics of particular relevance to hypnotherapy, I first consider the literature pertinent to the characteristics of successful psychotherapists in general. To illustrate the importance of therapist flexibility, realistically appraising the patient and the situation and assuming a goaldirected yet stepwise approach to the practice of hypnotherapy, I present two cases relevant to the training and general clinical context. Finally, a review of the research on operator variables in hypnotherapy, along with concluding comments, are presented.
