Effects of D-instantons

Abstract: Scattering of fundamental states of type IIB supergravity and superstring theory is discussed at low orders in perturbation theory in the background of a D-instanton. The integration over fermionic zero modes in both the low energy supergravity and in the string theory leads to explicit nonperturbative terms in the effective action. These include a single instanton correction to the known tree-level and one-loop $R^4$ interactions. The `spectrum' of multiply-charged D-instantons is deduced by T-duality in nine… Show more

“…(6.5) and (3.8)), the dominant contribution for small g s is the one in which a single vertex V φ is inserted in each disk [11,18], namely 12) whereas other terms, like for example (6.11), are subleading for small g s 12 . Moreover, this correlator is clearly 1PI.…”

“…The role of D-instantons and their relation to the gauge theory instantons have been intensively studied from many different points of view in the last years (see for example Refs. [10,11,12,14,13,15,16,17,18]; for recent reviews on this subject see Refs. [20,21,22] and references therein).…”

“…This problem has been intensively investigated in the past, see e.g. [1,28,[76][77][78][79][80][81][82][83][84][85][86][87][88][89] and our present understanding mainly derives from [86][87][88]. Indeed, it should be possible to resolve the problem by dualising under the Euclidean path integral and following the fate of the instanton solution.…”

“…At leading order beyond the Einstein-Hilbert term in the derivative expansion, the IIB effective action is expected to contain [22], [23] We further note that the higher-derivative corrections Eqs. (4.2)-(4.3) must respect the SL(2, Z) of Eq.…”
