Pulse wave velocity (PWV) has been used clinically as a direct measure of arterial stiffness. We investigated the inhibitory effects of defatted safflower seed extract (SSE) and serotonin derivatives (N-(p-coumaroyl)serotonin, N-feruloylserotonin; CS+FS), which are the active components in SSE, on hypercholesterolemia and atherosclerosis, using PWV in Kurosawa and Kusanagi-hypercholesterolemic (KHC) rabbits. SSE and CS+FS were supplemented with a commercial diet containing 0.5% cholesterol for 8 weeks in male KHC rabbits, aged 2 months. Pulse waves were recorded at different aortic positions using two catheters with micromanometers under pentobarbital anesthesia. The atherosclerotic lesioned area in the aorta was significantly reduced in the SSE and CS+FS groups, without significant changes in serum cholesterol and triglyceride levels among the three groups after supplementation. Local PWV (LPWV) in the middle thoracic and distal abdominal aortas was significantly smaller in the SSE and CS+FS groups than in the control group. PWV in the entire aorta was also significantly lower in the SSE and CS+FS groups, compared with that in the control group. Pressure-strain elastic modulus, an index of wall distensibility, was significantly lower in the middle thoracic and middle abdominal aortas in the SSE and CS+FS groups than in the control group. Wall thickness was also significantly smaller in the middle thoracic aorta in the SSE and CS+FS groups compared with that in the control group. Serotonin derivatives inhibited the progress of atherosclerosis and ameliorated wall distensibility, which contributed, in part, to the lowering of LPWV. Serotonin derivatives may be beneficial in improving vascular distensibility and in reducing cardiovascular risk.

a b s t r a c tOxidative stress has a relevant part in the etiology of several diseases and metabolic disorders, being reasonable to expect that antioxidant compounds might have beneficial effects in health maintenance or disease prevention. Antioxidant compounds might be isolated and characterized from different plant constituents, such as roots, stems, bark, leaves, flowers, fruits and seeds, using proper extraction methods. The Asteraceae family has a worldwide distribution, with special relevance in the Mediterranean, Eastern Europe and Asia Minor, being acknowledged about 25 000 species integrated in approximately 1000 genera. In addition to the anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic potential of some of these species, their high antioxidant power, as proven in research works with extracts (of roots, stems, bark, leaves, flowers, fruits and seeds) should be highlighted. Herein, the Asteraceae species with highest potential as sources of natural antioxidants with potential uses in medicine and in pharmaceutical, cosmetic and food industries were identified. The species were selected based on their botanical representativeness, being identified the 9 most relevant species: Achillea millefolium L., Acmella oleraceae Murr., Artemisia absinthium L., Bidens pilosa L., Carthamus tinctorius L., Inula crithmoides L., Matricaria recutita L., Otanthus maritimus L. and Parthenium hysterophorus L.. With the obtained information, it could be concluded that the bioactivity of the selected Asteraceae species lacks a complete characterization, constituting a research scope with great potential to be exploited in the development of dietary supplements, bioactive food ingredients or pharmaceutical based products with application in food industry, dermocosmetics or medicine.

We have previously reported that a soy oil-containing experimental diet (fat-free AIN93G containing oil thermally processed with soybean protein followed by filtration), inhibited body weight increases without any adverse effects when given ad libitum to male Wistar rats for 12 weeks. In the present paper, the mechanism of weight-loss promoting effects was investigated. Fasted 10-week-old rats were fed a slurry composed of AIN93G (fat-free), Cr 2 O 3 (marker), water, and 7 wt% soy oil or fresh oil (control) and sacrifi ced at 20, 60, 90, 120, 150, 210, 270 or 360 min. The stomach, small intestine, cecum, colon and feces were then collected to determine the distribution of the slurry in the digestive tract. The results indicated that the content was transferred faster from stomach to small intestine in the soy oil group than in the control group. Fecal excretion (derived from a commercial standard diet ingested before slurry administration) in the soy oil group was signifi cantly higher than in the control group. Digestive enzyme activities, lipase, sucrose, and maltose, were not inhibited by soy oil. In addition, feces collected in the 12-week feeding experiment were more in the dry weight and contained higher levels of nitrogen and water in the soy oil group than in the control group, revealing that an increased amount of nutrition was continuously excreted in the former group. The above-described findings suggest that soy oil stimulated peristalsis of the gastrointestinal tract and that colon contents are actively excreted, resulting in safe and steady body weight decreases.
