Effects of demographic and physical factors on nerve conduction study values of healthy subjects in a multi-ethnic Asian population

Abstract: NCS parameters in multi-ethnic Malaysians were influenced independently by various demographic and physical factors, including ethnicity. Muscle Nerve 54: 244-248, 2016.

“…Children aged 4 years and above were considered to have attained adult NCS reference ranges . Hence, for this group, abnormal values were defined as more than 2 standard deviations above/below our laboratory's normal mean values . Electrophysiological evidence of neuropathy (electrophysiological neuropathy) was defined as the presence of abnormal NCS parameters (including distal motor latencies, motor and sensory action potential amplitudes and/or motor and sensory nerve conduction velocities) in two or more nerves.…”

“…3,11,21 Most of our values were similar to four other similar published studies. 2,3,5,8,13,21,22,23 However, there were some differences, which could be attributed to different NCS techniques, machine settings, and demographic characteristics. A notable dissimilarity was in the CMAP and the SNAP amplitudes because some studies used peak-to-peak measurement and others used baseline-to-negative peak measurements.…”

“…Both the sural nerves are to be abnormal to conclude the case to be a Diabetic poly neuropathy case. Fong SY, Goh KJ, Shahrizaila N, et al 14 The clinical and economic burden of diabetic poly neuropathy is because of its role in foot ulceration and lower limb amputation, susceptibility to falls and fractures and reduced quality of life. Glycaemic control slows the progression of Diabetic poly neuropathy.…”
