Effects of dietary and physical activity interventions on the risk of type 2 diabetes in South Asians: meta-analysis of individual participant data from randomised controlled trials

Abstract: Aims/hypothesis Individuals of South Asian origin have a high risk of type 2 diabetes and of dying from a diabetes-attributable cause. Lifestyle modification intervention trials to prevent type 2 diabetes in high-risk South Asian adults have suggested more modest effects than in European-origin populations. The strength of the evidence of individual studies is limited, however. We performed an individual participant data meta-analysis of available RCTs to assess the effectiveness of lifestyle modification in S… Show more

“…As is well reported, high BMI accounts greatly for diabetes and has been continuously rising 25 . The incidence of diabetes could be reduced by weight loss 37 , 38 . Globally, diet low in whole grains, nuts and seeds, and fruits were the leading risks among dietary risks, which were much more pronounced in lower SDI countries.…”

“…Unfortunately, the underlying causes for the higher susceptibility to both CVD and T2D among South Asians compared with other populations remain unclear despite many hypotheses, mainly related to socioeconomic, genetic, developmental and lifestyle factors, having been investigated 29. However, preventive measures could still target known risk factors that impact T2D risk among both South Asians and white Europeans, such as dietary intake and physical activity 30…”

“…Type 2 diabetes can be prevented with lifestyle modification in different populations [1][2][3]. However, the efficacy of lifestyle interventions depends strongly on whether the lifestyle changes are adopted [4].…”
