Effects of dietary beef tallow on performance, rumen fermentation, carcass traits and meat quality of growing lambs

Abstract: Growing lambs were evaluated for the effect of increasing dietary levels of beef tallow (BT) on performance, rumen fermentation, and carcass and meat characteristics. Twenty-one 5-month-old male Rambouillet lambs were assigned randomly to one of three diets with 0, 20, and 40 g BT/kg dry matter (DM) and similar energy and protein contents. Lambs were adapted to the diets for 15 days, followed by a 45-day evaluation trial. Data were analysed using a mixed model. Growth, feed intake and ruminal fermentation were… Show more

“…The inclusion of chia seed in diets for rabbits increased the PUFA content and decreased the SFA biosynthesis in L. thoracis [ 27 ], which is similar to the results found in this study. The opposite takes place when diets are supplemented with animal fat, i.e., when supplemented with beef tallow: the higher proportion of SFAs (palmitic and stearic acids mainly) than UFAs (MUFAs and PUFAs) are found in lamb meat ( L. dorsi ) [ 33 ].…”

“…Lopez et al highlighted weight gain in younger lambs, contrasting with Ahmed et al's broader approach. Yet, both studies underscored the advantages of adding tallow to the diet [94]. Considering its use in cattle feed requires careful dosing due to bovine spongiform encephalopathy (mad cow disease) risk.…”
