Effects of Dietary Cottonseed Meal and Gossypol on Growth of Young Channel Catfish

Abstract: Ten isonitrogenous and isocaloric diets containing different percentages by weight of cottonseed ineal or gossypol acetate were fed to age‐0 channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus for 8 weeks. Growth was inhibited when fish were fed diets with more than 17.4% cottonseed meal or with 0.09% and greater free gossypol. Fish fed cottonseed meal at 17.4% or greater had higher wholebody concentrations of free gossypol than fish fed lower amounts. Free gossypol in muscle tissue was less than that recommended as safe for … Show more

“…However, some cultured aquatic species can tolerate relatively high dietary levels of CSM (Li and Robinson 2006). Numerous studies have been conducted to determine the level of CSM that can be incorporated in channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) diets without affecting their growth performance (Dorsa et al 1982;Robinson 1991;Robinson and Li 1994). Results have shown that the amount of CSM that can be included in catfish diets depends mainly on the levels of free gossypol and available lysine.…”

“…Growth depression occurred in channel catfish fed diets containing more than 900 mg free gossypol/kg diet (Dorsa et al, 1982), whereas a diet containing as low as 290 mg free gossypol/kg diet reduced the growth of rainbow trout (Herman, 1970). Iron as ferrous sulfate, has been successfully used to counteract the toxicity of free gossypol in diets of monogastric, terrestrial animals.…”

“…They have reported that the acceptable level of cotton seed meal inclusion in the ration is not higher than the maximum of 10% and more than 55% substitution of soybean meal by cotton seed meal could result in reduced live weight gain. Dorsa et al (1982) indicated that more than 17.4% of cotton seed meal in the ration inhibited the growth. Similarly, Hepher (1989) has reported that cotton seed meal has a lower nutritional value than soybean meal, which is also supported by the current study.…”
