Effects of dietary fiber on intestinal growth, cell proliferation, and morphology in growing pigs2

Abstract: Growing pigs (initial BW 14.3 +/- 1.2 kg) were fed isocaloric (3.26 Mcal of ME/kg) and isonitrogenous (16% CP) diets containing either 0 (low fiber, LF; n = 4) or 10% (high fiber, HF; n = 4) wheat straw for ad libitum intake for 14 d. On d 14, each pig was injected i.v. with bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU, a thymidine analog; 5 mg/kg) and was slaughtered 1 h later. Visceral organs (liver, pancreas, and intestines) were weighed, and tissue samples were obtained. Feed consumption, daily gain, gain: feed, and final BW d… Show more

“…Their composition and their physico-chemical properties, explain this effect [14,16,25,29]. The presence of fibres and their properties such as viscosity or water-holding capacity increase the turnover of the epithelial cells but also mucus excretion, pancreatic secretions or the microflora [30][31][32][33]. A feed-back effect, coming from the volatile fatty acids produced in the colon on the small intestine epithelial cell proliferation is also suspected [34].…”

“…Chitooligosaccharide are generally produced by hydrolysis of the chitosan polymer through a variety of methods, which includes chemical, enzymatic or physical process of hydrolysis (Kittur et al, 2005). Compared with the intact high molecular weight (MW) chitosan, COS generally have a greater solubility and often a higher level of biological activity (Jin et al, 1994;Kim and Mendis, 2006).…”
