Effects of dietary supplementation with Pediococcus acidilactici ZPA017 on reproductive performance, fecal microbial flora and serum indices in sows during late gestation and lactation

Abstract: Objective: This study was conducted to determine the effects of dietary supplementation with Pediococcus acidilactici (P. acidilactici) ZPA017 as a probiotic on reproductive perfor mance, fecal microbial flora and serum indices in sows during late gestation and lactation. Methods: A total of 94 sows (Large White×Yorkshire, average 4.50 parities) were randomly allotted to two dietary treatments: control diet and the diet supplemented with P. acidilactici ZPA017 (2.40×10 9 colonyforming unit/kg of diets). The st… Show more

“…The increased NBA in the treatment group was in agreement with some previous findings [ 5 , 8 , 9 ]. However, many other studies reported nonsignificant effect of probiotic supplementation on this criterion [ 4 , 6 , 7 , 10 , 14 20 ]. The positive effect of the probiotic supplementation on NBA may be partly attributable to the fact that it reduced stillbirth rate.…”

“…It is interesting that Bacillus subtilis QST 713 increased both litter size/NBA and birth weight despite the fact that birth weight is negatively associated with litter size [ 25 , 26 ]. Some previous studies failed to find any beneficial effects of probiotic supplementation at late gestation on birth weight of piglets [ 7 9 , 20 ] while other studies even found a reduced birth weight in the probiotic supplementation group where litter and/or NBA increased in comparison with that in the control [ 5 , 14 ]. Two previous studies found that birth weight was increased while litter sizes were unaltered when probiotic was supplemented throughout 2 successive estrus cycles [ 27 ] or late gestation [ 28 ].…”

“…Antibiotic resistance, prophages, plasmid and plasmid-associated bacteriocins have been indicated as source of variability at P. pentosaceus genomes 9 . Our P. acidilactici strain, however, also contains a plasmidassociated bacteriocin operon (pediocin PA-1), differing from other strains reported in the literature, such as ZPA017 and BCC-1 10,11 . The metabolic characteristics of the strains obtained indicated a wider metabolic potential for carbohydrate transport for the P. acidilactii transport while the P. pentosaceus presented he capability to synthesize lysine and had quorum sensing related genes.…”

“…Genome analysis indicated that these three isolates likely belong to two different Pediococcus species: one P. acidilactii, and two P. pentosaceus. The P. acidilactici ST31BZ genome showed similar values of size, GC content, number of predicted proteins and ribosomal operons as other P. acidilactici strains 10,12 . Detected CRISPR systems are similar to previously described in P. acidilactici HN9 13 .…”
