Effects of dietary uridine 5'-monophosphate on immune responses in newborn calves

Abstract: When compared with normal milk, bovine colostrum contains a large amount of uridine 5'-monophosphate (UMP) and its derivatives. In the present study, we carried out 2 experiments to determine the effects of dietary UMP (2 g/d) on the immune status of newborn calves. In Exp. 1, newborn Holstein bull calves were fed milk replacer alone (control group) or milk replacer supplemented with UMP (UMP group) from d 4 to 10 after birth. The increase in interferon-gamma concentration by peripheral blood mononuclear cells… Show more

“…The plasma concentrations of GGT, GOT and GPT were measured by using commercial kits (Fuji Dry Chem., Tokyo, Japan). Fecal samples were taken on D4, 14, 21, 28 and 49 to measure the IgA concentrations by using a commercial kit (Mashiko et al . 2009).…”

“…Alternative reasons must therefore be sought to account for the higher relative proportions of uridine nucleotides in colostrum. It has also been suggested that uridine accounts for many of the immunological properties of nucleotides in colostrum (Kulkarni, Fanslow, Rudolph, & Van Buren, 1986;Leach et al, 1995;Van Buren, Kulkarni, Fanslow, & Rudolph, 1985) and, more recently, Mashiko et al (2009) demonstrated that dietary UMP affected the immune response of newborn calves.…”

“…Dietary UMP can affect the immune response in newborn calves. 9 Our previous study demonstrated that UMP supplementation during the period immediately following weaning improved the growth performance of piglets and may have aided intestinal development. 10 Additionally, UR can also be metabolized to form other biologically active molecules, such as uridine diphosphate (UDP)-glucose which is important in the UDP-dependent glycosylation of proteins and lipids.…”
