Effects of different colors of film mulch on soil temperature and rice growth in a non‐flooded condition

Abstract: BACKGROUNDRice cultivation under film mulching with no flooding is widely used as an effective water‐saving technology. Different colors of film mulch have different effects on the soil hydrothermal environment and crop growth because of their different optical properties. However, the effects of different colors of film mulch on soil temperature and rice physiological growth are not clearly understood.RESULTSField experiments were conducted in 2019 and 2020 to investigate the effects of different color mulche… Show more

“…Plastic film mulching technology is a mainstream water-saving technique in arid and semi-arid areas, known for increasing soil temperature (Zhang et al 2022;Zhang, Huang, et al 2023) and reducing ineffective soil evaporation (Liao, Zhang, et al 2022). In rainfed areas, plastic film mulching improves WUE (Iqbal et al 2019).…”

“…However, the most commonly used material is plastic, as it is highly resistant compared to others (Crawford and Quinn 2017). Different colours of plastic have various effects on the hydrothermal environment of the soil and crop growth due to their distinct physical properties (Zhang et al 2023). Black plastic mulching, for instance, absorbed more than 90% of solar radiation, warming the soil (Strik et al 2006), while white plastic mulching re ected a high proportion of solar radiation, decreasing soil temperature and increased canopy light intensity and air temperature (Andreotti et al 2010).…”
