Effects of different types of exercise on muscle activity and balance control

Abstract: [Purpose] This study analyzed the effects of isotonic, isokinetic, and isometric exercises of ankle joint muscles on lower extremity muscle activity and balance control. [Subjects and Methods] The subjects were 30 healthy adults (15 males) in their 20s who were randomly assigned to three different exercise method groups of 10 people each. The isokinetic exercise group performed three sets at an angular velocity of 60°/sec, including a single rest period after every set of 10 repetitions. The isometric exercise… Show more

“…The protocol of the isometric assessment consisted of 3 maximal extension efforts, each lasting 3 seconds with intervening 15-second rests. The isokinetic assessment comprised 3 maximal extensions at an angular velocity of 60°/s, as is widely used to evaluate isokinetic muscle strength 18 ) . The highest muscular force output at any moment during the assessment was defined as the peak torque and is reported in absolute terms (Nm) and normalized to body weight, represented as the body-weight-normalized (Nm/kg) peak torque.…”

“…Osteoarthritis of the knee (OA knee) can severely limit daily activities and can cause disability since it directly affects walking ability ( Liu et al, 2017 ). Therapeutic exercise is a key component of treatment for OA of the knee ( Kolasinski et al, 2020 ; Esselman & Lacerte, 1994 ; Wiles et al, 2018 ; Kim et al, 2015 ). Research indicates that strengthening the quadriceps muscles might help alleviate discomfort and restore function to the knee joint ( Anwer & Alghadir, 2014 ; Hislop et al, 2020 ; Zeng et al, 2021 ).…”
