This paper measures the socioeconomic and resource-efficient influences of digital transformation in the public sector in the European region. To capture the socioeconomic impacts of digital public services, we employ a socioeconomic score index calculated as the unweighted average of the re-scaled scores for changes in employment, exports, and turnover from ecoindustries. Regarding resource-efficient impacts, we employ the resource efficiency score index measured as the unweighted average of the re-scaled scores for material, energy productivity, and the intensity of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Measures such as user-centricity, business mobility, and key enablers are used to demonstrate the level of digitalization in the public sector. According to our estimations based on various econometric techniques, digital public services have a favorable effect on the economy and society through a positive impact on employment, exports, and turnover of eco-industries. The effects of digitalization on resource productivity follow a nonlinear U-shaped curve, suggesting that the improvement of resource efficiency is only present when the digital transformation process reaches a certain level.

Impacts of digital business on global value chain participation in European countries

As the first empirical study of the nonlinear effects of digital business on global value chains (GVC), we provide insight into the nonlinear effects of digital business on the global value chain (GVC) values. We employ four indicators, including the value of online selling, sales through E-commerce, and customer relationship management (CRM) usage, to capture the prevalence of digital business in the economy. By testing a sample of 25 European countries that have been analyzed using various econometric techniques over the period 2012–2019, our estimation results confirm that GVC values are a U-shaped function of digitalization. That is, an increase in digitalization pervasiveness initially induces more significant risks and uncertainties, hindering European countries from getting involved in or scale-up within the GVC. However, a rise in digitalization pervasiveness goes beyond a specific threshold, which facilitates GVC activities as more opportunities are created. Furthermore, our findings suggest that digital business contributes significantly to reducing the adverse influences of global uncertainty on the GVC values, while the marginal effects of digital business on GVC values become more pronounced in countries with the most advanced institutional structure.

This study examines the role of artificial intelligence (AI) as a marketing strategy and explains its contribution to firms and the factors influencing their development. The study tests an empirical model based on the research variables and constructs identified using structural equation modeling and the fuzzy set qualitative comparative analysis (FsQCA) approach. Data were collected from 278 food firms. The findings indicate that the implementation of an AI marketing strategy affects performance. Additionally, this study shows that marketing capabilities, customer value co‐creation, and market orientation are positively related to performance. Finally, the results highlight that marketing capabilities, customer value co‐creation, and market orientation affect the development of AI marketing strategies. The research results of FsQCA find that causal conditions of marketing capabilities, customer value co‐creation, market orientation, and AI marketing strategy are necessary and sufficient recipes for higher firm performance.
