Effects of donor plant temperature, photoperiod, and age on anther culture response of Capsicum annuum L.

Abstract: Effects of temperature and photoperiod for donor plant growth on embryo formation in Capsicum annuum anther culture were investigated. Donor plants were grown in glasshouses at minimum temperatures between 16 and 30 ° C and at photoperiods between 11 and 19 h. Anthers were collected from individual plants over five to nine week periods to test the significance of donor plant age. Embryos were obtained at all temperature regimes with a calculated optimum temperature of 26.4 ° C. Embryo formation was unaffected … Show more

“…A year after, androgenesis induction in European varieties was reported (Novak 1974). Thereafter a number of cultivars, mostly of C. annuum, and interspecific crosses have been tested for responsiveness to anther culture (Sibi et al 1979;Morrison et al 1986;Kristiansen and Andersen 1993;Mityko et al 1995;Nowaczyk et al 2006;Gémes Juhász et al 2009). …”

“…In fact, the genotype of the donor plant is, as in many other species, one of the most decisive factors. In some cases, the optimization of growth conditions for a given genotype is not sufficient to overcome the barriers imposed by the genotype itself (Kristiansen and Andersen 1993). However, the possibility of applying different types of inductive protocols allows for the choice of the most convenient for each variety.…”

“…Among them, the effect of genotype on haploid embryogenesis in pepper has been shown to be the most important factor in many studies (Kristiansen and Andersen, 1993;Qin and Rotino, 1993;Mitykó et al, 1995;Rodeva et al, 2004;Gémes Juhász et al, 2009;Nowaczyk et al, 2009).…”

“…In most solanaceous crops placing excised buds at high or low temperature was found to be effective for higher response of cultured anthers (Kristiansen andAnderson, 1993 and. In the present study, heat treatment of cultured anthers at 35 o C for seven days was found to influence callus induction frequency.…”
