Food insecurity in Ghana is major challenge in the country, with a significant portion of the population (5%) facing the risk of inadequate access to food. Whilst there is food insecurity, agricultural productivity in the country is not increasing. Additionally, farming in Ghana especially in northern Ghana fully depends on rainfall. Also, farmers are faced with climate crisis such as drought and high temperatures which affects productivity. Alternative ways such as fertigation have been demonstrated to increase agricultural productivity in many parts of the world. However, this technique is under-utilized in Ghana. Therefore, this study was conducted to evaluate the effect of fertigation and organic manure on maize growth and yield production in Northern Region of Ghana. Organic manure (OM) mainly compost was incorporated in soil together with fertigation and the effects on maize plant growth parameters (i.e., plant height, number of leaves, stem girth) and yield (i.e., number of grains, number of wet and dry grains) were measured. The study found that maize plants treated with OM and fertigation application had significantly higher plant growth parameters and yield compared to maize plants that were not given OM but were manually fertilized. The results showed that the combined use of fertigation and OM application holds immense potential for enhancing maize plant growth and yield. By maximizing the growth and yield potential of maize plants through fertilization and OM application, farmers can address the growing demand for this vital crop while promoting sustainable and environmentally responsible agricultural practices.

This experiment aimed to assess the impact of de cit irrigation on both the quantitative and qualitative yield of forage maize hybrids. The study was structured as a split-plot design, utilizing a randomized complete block design with three replications, where took place at the Agricultural Research Station of Gorgan in the years 2021 and 2022. De cit irrigation was implemented at four different levels as the main plots, which comprised 100%, 75%, 50%, and 25% of the water requirement. These main plots were further subdivided into subplots, consisting of four hybrid varieties, namely SC703, SC704, ZP548, and BK50.The results showed that the highest total biomass (47939 kg ha − 1 ) was obtained under 100% water requirement (control) and SC704 hybrid. The reduction in total biomass for the treatments at 75%, 50%, and 25% of the water requirement, when compared to the control treatment, amounted to 7%, 47.4%, and 79.1%, respectively. De cit irrigation signi cantly affected qualitative traits except for NDF at the level of 1% and increased all quality traits. Accordingly, the highest percentage of CP, NDF, and ADF was obtained by hybrid SC703 with 50% water requirement (by 9.20%), hybrid BK50 under 25% water requirement (by 30.73%), and BK50 with 75% water requirement (by 44.03%). The highest water use e ciency was observed in 75% of the water requirement (7.79 kg m − 3 ). Considering the signi cant reduction in water consumption (1795 m 3 ha − 1 ) achieved with this treatment, it is advisable to recommend irrigation at 75% of the water requirement alongside the cultivation of the SC703 hybrid for forage production in the northern region of Iran.

Maize is a crop widespread in various parts of the world, serving as a source of food for humans and animals and also as a source of energy. Seeds can be attacked by pathogenic microorganisms and, a way to protect them against these attacks, it is to coat them with suitable products. In this paper, empirical equations with 2 and 3 parameters are proposed to describe the kinetics of water absorption by film-coated maize seeds during germination at temperature of 10 °C and atmospheric pressure of 71 cmHg. A total of 14 experiments involving different types of film on the seeds were carried out, plus a control experiment without film coating. A computer program, which automatically fits about 200 functions available in its library to the experimental data, was used for each of the 15 datasets. This program uses non-linear regression to generate a classification of the best-fitted functions, based on the value of the reduced chi-square of each fit performed. The best equations with 2 and 3 parameters obtained in this study were compared with each other, and the one that best described the kinetics of water absorption by the seeds was chosen. Also, the equation chosen in this study was compared with other empirical equations available in the literature. In all comparisons, the equation obtained and proposed in this study showed better statistical indicators than the empirical equations available in the literature. It was also possible to conclude that the film coating treatments did not significantly interfere with the value of the final moisture content (about 35%, w.b.), but influenced the time of the seed germination process (between 24 and 40 days).
