Effects of early postoperative nasal decongestant on symptom relief after septoplasty

Abstract: The use of nasal decongestant sprays in the very early postoperative period is beneficial to reduce the postsurgical nasal crusting and bleeding symptoms and also for decreasing nasal resistance in this edematous period.

“…Oxymetazoline nasal spray is found to be non-inferior to cocaine and epinephrine in nasal surgeries with the benefit of less systemic complications of arrhythmia, hypertension and cardiac arrest [8]. The benefits of oxymetazoline nasal spray when given post-operatively after nasal septoplasty include reduced bleeding and crust formation in the early post-operative period [9]. In our study, the benefit of adding oxymetazoline nasal spray post-operatively after DCR to decrease congestion and pain and minimize bleeding was not demonstrated as compared to 0.65% NaCl nasal spray.…”

“…Oxymetazoline has potent decongestant effects, and in some studies has affected NOSE values in septoplasty patients and PNIF values in healthy patients. 6,7 The trigeminal nerve receptors and their function play an important role in nasal sensation. When stimulated by eucalyptol, the TRPM8 receptor creates the feeling of a clear nasal passage.…”

“…We found a significant difference between the change in assessments with control intranasal spray compared with the change assessments with oxymetazoline intranasal spray in TNSS, and did not find a difference in NOSE or PNIF. “…The current study investigated the sensory perception of two decongesting nasal sprays, new galenics and comparator, in patients during convalescence from surgery on the nasal septum or nasal conchae. The use of decongestants as medical treatment after nasal surgery aims to reduce mucosal oedema by inducing vasoconstriction, and beneficial effects on nasal symptoms after septoplasty have been demonstrated [ 8 ]. However, cytotoxic and ciliary-toxic effects observed in in vitro studies may indicate a limit in decongestant application, and the risk of rebound swelling after decongestant discontinuation should always be considered [ 9 ].…”
