Effects of Electron-Beam Radiation on Nutritional Parameters of Portuguese Chestnuts (Castanea sativa Mill.)

Abstract: Chestnuts are a widely consumed fruit around the world, being Portugal the fourth biggest producer in Europe. Storage of these nuts is an important step during processing, and the most widely used fumigant was banned in the European Union under the Montreal protocol due to its toxicity. Recently, radiation has been introduced as a cheap and clean conservation method. Previous studies of our research group proved that gamma radiation had no negative effect on the nutritional value of chestnuts; in fact, storage… Show more

“…Herein, the main purpose was evaluating alterations in the TAG profiles of chestnuts submitted to electron beam or γ-irradiation (0, 0.5, 1 and 3 kGy), analyzed immediately after irradiation or after 30 days storage, assessing its potential use as an irradiation marker. Furthermore, obtained data constitute complementary information to previous results regarding irradiation effects on the chemical composition and bioactivity of chestnuts (Antonio et al, 2012a,b;Carocho et al, 2012;Fernandes et al, 2011a,b).…”

“…The used chestnut samples, previously studied for their nutritional value (Carocho et al, 2012;Fernandes et al, 2011b), were obtained in Bragança, Trás-os-Montes (Portugal). All the samples belong to Longal cultivar from Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) "Castanha da Terra Fria".…”

“…Our research group has been working with chestnut fruits (Carocho et al, 2012), flowers (Barros et al, 2010) and leaves, with very good results regarding antioxidant (Carocho et al, 2014) and anti-candida activity of the flowers. Recently, we have also reported the profile in phenolic compounds and antioxidant properties of flower decoctions and infusions, in which the most prevalent molecules were trigalloyl-HHDP-glucoside and pentagalloyl glucoside (Carocho et al, 2014).…”

“…To read Amber and Gammachrome YR dosimeters, spectrophotometric methods were used at 603 nm and at 530 nm, respectively, to estimate the dose from the value of absorbance according to a previous calibration curve. For the Graphite calorimeter dosimeter the electrical resistance was read and converted in dose according to a previous calibration curve (Carocho et al, 2012).…”
