An introduced, non-native, exotic, or alien species are those that grow in areas outside of their natural habitats. They get introduced deliberately or accidentally into new areas by anthropogenic activities or naturally through water, wind, etc. In non-native areas, these species invade rapidly due to the non-availability of natural enemies (prey) in a new habitat. Therefore, these fast-spreading exotic species are called invasive alien species. Verbesina encelioides, an invasive species of the family Asteraceae, is introduced from the United States and started to invade many arid or semi-arid regions. It is commonly known as 'Golden crownbeard'. The weed is used as a source of traditional medicines by the indigenous people. Some researchers investigated its toxic, allelopathic, antimicrobial and nematocidal properties. Its phytochemical analysis has shown the presence of flavonoids, terpenoids, alkaloids, carbohydrates, saponins, phenolic compounds, sterol, etc. The pharmacological studies showed this plant's antibacterial, antitumor, antifungal, antiprotozoal and hypoglycemic potential. Attempts have been made to cover various aspects related to V. encelioides in this review article. INTRODUCTION:Exotic species are also referred to as alien, non-native, non-indigenous, invasive or introduced species and are defined as species that usually occur outside their natural geographic areas 1 . These species start dominating and negatively affecting the native flora. Nowadays, the invasion of these exotic species has threatened the ecological diversity of natural ecosystems in different parts of the world.

The wild sunflower, an invasive alien species, is known to affect the performance of field crops. A field experiment was conducted to estimate the effects of different levels of wild sunflower and common bean densities on common bean yield components and grain yield, as well as to quantify yield loss due to their competition at varying densities. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design in a factorial arrangement with four replications. Hence, factorial combinations of three common bean densities and five wild sunflower densities were tested at two locations. At 24 plants m−2, wild sunflower had maximum dry biomass of 413.84 and 549.83 g−2 at Adamitulu and Melkassa, respectively. An increase in wild sunflower density from 0 to 24 plants m−2 resulted in a reduction of pods per plant up to 62.41% and 83.11%, respectively, at Adamitulu and Melkassa. Compared to the weed‐free plot, the highest wild sunflower density (24 plants m−2) had a 4.6‐fold reduction in seed per pod. Weed‐free plots at Adamitulu and Melkassa yielded the highest grain yields of 2.77 and 3.37 t ha−1, respectively. Common bean grain yield reduced by 88.12% and 67.64%, in Adamitulu and Melkassa, due to the highest density of wild sunflower. The rectangular hyperbolic equation fits common bean grain yields well. This study, hence, proposes that wild sunflower plants be kept at a density of no more than three plants per meter square to minimize severe yield loss and help common bean growers make decisions on wild sunflower control.

Weeds are plants that are not desirable in a particular place, time and area. There are around 250,000 plant species on the planet, with about 3% or 8000 species, acting as weeds. Of those most of the area known species infest non-cropped areas. Weed flora, including annual, biennial and perennial grasses, sedges, and broad-leaf weeds, infest non-cropped regions. Wastelands (48%) have the most species followed by cultivated fields (20%), roadsides (14%), and forests (8%). Weeds in non-cropped areas decrease the land value; Aquatic weeds can obstruct navigation and devastate fisheries. The major aquatic weeds such as water hyacinth and Salvinia, and others such as Alternanthera philoxiroides have recently gained prominence. Cannabis sativa (Marijuana/Indian hemp), Parthenium hysterophorus (canary grass), and Verbesina encelioides (Golden Crown beard) infest non-cropped areas and roadsides Effective Management of weeds is necessary to reduce the harmful impacts of weeds. Hand hoeing, soil solarization, deadly wilting with high heat, burning or chemical attack with herbicides are some of the methods used.
