Effects of Essential Oil Formulations on the Adult Insect Tribolium Castaneum (Herbst) (Col., Tenebrionidae)

Abstract: Stored product pests such as Tribolium castaneum (Herbst, 1979) are a major problem. Adult insects were obtained from laboratory cultures maintained in the dark in incubators at 25± 1C and 70-80% r.h., reared on wheat flour and fed with flour disks containing a known concentration of essential oil of 9 plants. The chemical components of essential oil of 3 plants, collected on the area of Montenegro, were also identified using GC-MS analysis. The results of insecticidal effect of essential oils were discussed. … Show more

“…The Montenegran EOCN rich in monoterpene alcohol carvacrol showed strong insecticidal and fumigant activities against Tribolium castaneum adults [ 88 ]. Also, mortality rate of adult insects was tested: 56.67% of the insects died after 24 h, 83.33% after 48 h, while after 96 h the oil showed greatest toxicity and caused the death of 96.67%.…”

“…Dastagir and Hussain [24] reported on the insecticidal activity of plant exacts. Popovic et al [25] studied the mortality rate and insecticidal activity of 9 important plant oils with known concentrations against T. castaneum (Herbst). Hameed et al [26] studied 2 plant extracts, namely Azadirchta indica (Neem) and Nerium oleander (Kanair), fermented products Actinomycetales bacterium and Saccharopolyspora spinosa, and commercial Spinosad biological insecticide were used to evaluate the insecticidal and persistence against T. castaneum Herbst.…”
