“…In the latter group, interestingly, this finding is further supported by the upregulation of molecular pathways involved in PV expression, such as Pgc-1 α, required for both mRNA and protein expression of PV in the hippocampus ( Lucas et al, 2010 ; Jinde et al, 2013 ) and a master regulator of mitochondrial biogenesis ( St-Pierre et al, 2006 ), and Sirt 1 , a histone deacetylase that directly regulates the activity of PGC-1α ( Rodgers et al, 2008 ; Aquilano et al, 2010 ). This is not surprising, since PV-expressing interneurons are known to express estrogen receptors ( Blurton-Jones and Tuszynski, 2002 ; Higaki et al, 2012 ) and changes in size of the PV-expressing subpopulation following E2 treatment have previously been reported in different brain regions ( Rewal et al, 2005 ; Macrì et al, 2010 ; Sotonyi et al, 2010 ; Koh, 2014 ), as well as in non-neural tissues ( Wirakiat et al, 2012 ).…”

“…Based on the time course of previous studies investigating neuromuscular adaptations to surgically induced menopause, rats were euthanized after 10 weeks. 14,18 For control animals, the estrous cycle was not controlled for on the day of euthanization. After euthanization, larynges were excised, bisected, fixed in 4% formaldehyde for 1 hour, and cryoprotected overnight in 20% sucrose solution at 4 C. Hemilarynges were then flash frozen in isopentane cooled to just above freezing temperature and stored at −80 C until processed.…”

“…The collected epithelial cells were stained with 0.5% methylene blue. The state of evaluation of the estrous cycle was determined according to the work of Wirakiat et al (2012). The rats were in the stage of diestrus before ovariectomy, except for the SHAM group.…”
