Effects of exogenous methyl jasmonate and salicylic acid on rice resistance toOebalus pugnax

Abstract: Rice plants possess defense mechanisms that can be elicited using hormones as elicitors, mainly SA 16 mmol L , to induce resistance against RSB. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry.

“…MeJA and MeSA are signaling molecules that are produced in plants for the development and modulation of resistance to insects and pathogens [ 31 ]. Exogenous applications of MeJA and MeSA to plants imitate responses similar to that when plants are attacked by pathogens or herbivores and can enhance the production of secondary plant metabolites [ 30 , 32 , 33 ]. A common modification of plant secondary metabolites is methylation, catalyzed by various methyltransferases.…”

“…Application of MJ activates production of plant defensive compounds and expression of resistance-related genes, subsequently reducing insect herbivory (Yu et al 2019). Thus, utilizing MJ-induced defenses has emerged as an effective method to increase plant protection against various crop pests (Stella de Freitas et al 2019;Stenberg 2017).…”

“…MJ had repellent effects on leaf folders [Senthil-Nathan 2019], aphids, phytophagous thrips species and hoverfly species, the phloem feeder, the potato aphid Macrosiphum euphorbiae [Brunissen et al 2010], the soybean aphid Aphis glycines and the soybean thrips Neohydatothrips variabilis [Selig et al 2016]. What is important, with reduced number of the stink bug, Oebalus pugnax, also grains per panicle in rice elevated under MJ (2 and 5 mM) treatment [Stella de Freitas et al 2019], but MJ application also led to reductions in Triticum aestivum yield and plant height [Bayram and Tonğa 2018]. Simultaneously, MJ was attractive to wheat stem sawflies, lady beetle species [Bayram and Tonğa 2018], small-flower bug Orius spp.…”
