Persimmon is a delicious fruit, and its leaves are considered a valuable ingredient in food, beverage, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic sectors. Traditionally, persimmon leaves (PL) are used as a functional tea in Asian culture to cure different ailments, and are also incorporated into various food and cosmeceutical products as a functional ingredient. PL mainly contain flavonoids, terpenoids, and polysaccharides, along with other constituents such as carotenoids, organic acids, chlorophylls, vitamin C, and minerals. The major phenolic compounds in PL are proanthocyanidins, quercetin, isoquercetin, catechin, flavonol glucosides, and kaempferol. Meanwhile, ursolic acid, rotungenic acid, barbinervic acid, and uvaol are the principal terpenoids. These compounds demonstrate a wide range of pharmacological activities, including antioxidant, anticancer, antihypertensive, antidiabetic, anti-obesity, anti-tyrosinase, antiallergic, and antiglaucoma properties. This review summarizes the latest information on PL, mainly distribution, traditional uses, industrial potential, and bioactive compounds, as well as their potential action mechanisms in exhibiting biological activities. In addition, the effect of seasonality and geographical locations on the content and function of these biomolecules are discussed.

In the present study, we investigated the combinatorial effects of betaine supplementation and boxthorn (Lycium chinense Mill.) leaf on high-fat diet (HFD)-induced body weight/body fat increase, plasma lipid profile and liver damage. Suboptimal dosage of hot water extract of boxthorn leaf (Lycium chinense water extract, LWE) exerted partial inhibitory effect on body weight/body fat increase in HFD-fed mice. Betaine supplementation potentiated the effect of LWE showing a significant inhibition against HFD-induced increase in body weight/body fat. However, both LWE alone and LWE plus betaine had no effect on plasma cholesterols, including total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol in HFD-fed mice. In contrast, HFD-induced increases in plasma and liver triglycerides were partially suppressed by LWE treatment and this was potentiated by betaine supplementation. In addition, both LWE alone and LWE plus betaine significantly suppressed HFD-induced glutamicoxaloacetic transaminase and glutamic-pyruvic transaminase. Collectively, our results suggest that the combination of boxthorn leaf and betaine might be beneficial for the management of obesity and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONSFor a long time, a combination of various substances was used to treat diseases effectively in traditional Chinese medicine. In the present study, we demonstrated that the supplementation of betaine synergizes with boxthorn leaf for improvement of high-fat diet-induced body weight/body fat increase and plasma/liver triglycerides accumulation. The results presented in this report suggest that the combination of boxthorn leaf and betaine might be beneficial for the treatment of obesity and related metabolic disorders.

Phenylpropanoid content of different varieties of buckwheat leaves and their hot water extracts

The aim of the study was to select the variety most suitable for producing buckwheat juice from buckwheat leaves. We harvested six common buckwheat varieties (USA, Japan HS4251, Daegwan, Daewon, Daesan, and Yangjul buckwheat) before they entered the reproductive growth period. The leaves were freeze-dried and used for extraction. We determined the phenylpropanoid content using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The Daegwan variety has the highest phenylpropanoid content such as chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, epicatechin, ferulic acid, rutin, quercetin, and kaempferol. The phenylpropanoid content in the Daegwan variety is 1,542.9 μg/g which is 1.5 times higher than other varieties. So, it was selected as a suitable variety for producing buckwheat juice using buckwheat leaves. Thus, buckwheat leaves of Daegwan variety were used for extraction with hot water at 60, 70, 80, 90 and 100°C for 3 h determine the optimal extraction temperature. As a result, we found out that the amount of rutin and total phenylpropanoids was the highest when buckwheat leaves were extracted with hot water at 60°C. Therefore, Daegwan variety is suitable for the development of functional extracts using the buckwheat leaves with the highest phenylpropanoid content.
