Effects of facultative symbionts and heat stress on the metabolome of pea aphids

Abstract: We examined metabolite pools of pea aphids with different facultative symbiont infections, and characterized their effects on aphid metabolism in baseline and heat stress conditions. The bacterial symbiont Serratia symbiotica protects aphid hosts from the detrimental results of heat stress and shields the obligate symbiont Buchnera from effects of heat. We investigated whether broad effects on metabolism might correlate with this protection. Both facultative symbiont infection and heat treatment had large effe… Show more

“…Whether EBF is the compound used to discriminate between symbiont-defended and uninfected aphids, however, is not certain. Infection with H. defensa and other symbionts has been shown to alter the pool of metabolites in A. pisum [65], and these changes may also serve as host selection cues. It would be interesting, however, if symbiont-defended aphids use reduced EBF to increase the threshold for dropping behavior, but parasitoids have co-opted the signal for their own benefit.…”

“…Specifically, higher Buchnera titers might increase aphid fitness under conditions of low nutrient availability or heat exposure, which can kill Buchnera cells (29,34). Our laboratory conditions may remove the pressure to have large numbers of Buchnera, as we provide highly nutritious host plants (fava bean seedlings) and a constant favorable temperature.…”

“…Stress is a general term that describes the inadequate physiological response of an organism to any mental, emotional or physical demand, whether real or imagined (Schiavone et al, 2013). The cellular mechanisms that trigger stress are unknown, but a relationship between stressors and oxidative stress has been described, because oxidative changes occur in situations such as road transport, weaning or heat stress (Burke et al, 2010). The increase in the activity of individuals subjected to stress requires greater ATP production, resulting in increased oxygen consumption by the mitochondria.…”
