Effects of feed additives on the development on the ileal bacterial community of the broiler chicken

Abstract: Intensifying concerns about the use of antimicrobials in meat and poultry production has enhanced interest in the application of prebiotics, probiotics and enzymes to enhance growth and prevent disease in food animals. Growth-promoting antibiotics enhance growth of animals by reducing the load of bacteria in the intestine, by reducing colonization by intestinal pathogens or by enhancing the growth and/or metabolism of beneficial bacteria in the intestine. Recently, molecular ecology, utilizing DNAsequence hete… Show more

“…Among the factors that are known to dramatically affect chicken gut commensal bacteria are in-feed antimicrobial drugs (Lu et al, 2008). Monensin, which is extensively used in the poultry industry to prevent Eimeria coccidiosis, exhibits antiparasitic and antibacterial properties as a result of its ability to transport metal cations through cellular membranes, and decoquinate is a coccidiostat that disrupts electron transport in the mitochondrial cytochrome system of Eimeria parasites (EFSA, 2003; Martel et al, 2004).…”

“…In their following study (Lu et al, 2008), gut microbiota of broiler chickens fed diet containing antibiotic growth promoters (bacitracin methylene disalicylate and virginiamycin; AGPs) was completely different from those seen in birds fed a non-medicated control diet, indicating that low levels of in-feed antimicrobials can substantially influence gut microbiota in broiler chickens.…”
