Effects of Feedforward Video Self-Modelling on Reading Fluency and Comprehension

Abstract: Being able to read at a fluent rate confers many advantages on an individual in both educational and wider social contexts throughout life. To be a fluent reader means that the individual can sustain high accuracy while reading at a rate appropriate to the material and the setting, and implies the development of automaticity in the cognitive processes involved in reading. Fluency has not, however, been the focus of much research. In this study, an observational learning technique — feedforward video self-model… Show more

“…Table I shows the reading fluency scores of the participants before and after the intervention. According to [15], the oral reading fluency norms for students, aged six to seven years, is between 23 WCM and 50 WCM. Participant 9 has 65 WCM which is the level of seven to eight-year-old reading fluency norm at the baseline.…”

“…In the test, the reading performance of a student is measured by asking the student to read a passage aloud for one minute, and the number of words read correctly was taken as the reading score. English educational experts have generally agreed that this one-minute reading test is sensitive, reliable and valid in measuring the students' oral reading fluency [15]. The comprehension and vocabulary tests were adapted from [11].…”

“…Video Self Modelling (the use of the learner's image as element to get attention) (Robson, Blampied, & Walker, 2015;Whitlow & Buggey, 2003), Scene view video modelling (the use of scenario or scene of an event) (Moore et al, 2013) and Point-of-view video by (Hine & Wolery, 2006;Tetreault & Lerman, 2010), to explain the how to prepare an afternoon snack to a 4 year old child with autism. This process involves the use of exact action that is to be done by the learner in sequential steps.…”

“…My instruction has been influenced by previous research in the use of video self‐modeling, also known as feedforward video self‐modeling. In these approaches, students watch video footage of themselves to reflect and improve their performance (Decker & Buggey, ; Robson, Blampied, & Walker, ). Decker and Buggey investigated the impact of video self‐modeling with students with learning disabilities.…”
