Effects of Feeding Time on Markers of Muscle Metabolic Flexibility Following Acute Aerobic Exercise in Trained Mice Undergoing Time Restricted Feeding

Abstract: Time-restricted feeding (TRF) is becoming a popular way of eating in physically active populations, despite a lack of research on metabolic and performance outcomes as they relate to the timing of food consumption in relation to the time of exercise. The purpose of this study was to determine if the timing of feeding/fasting after exercise training differently affects muscle metabolic flexibility and response to an acute bout of exercise. Male C57BL/6 mice were randomized to one of three groups for 8 weeks. Th… Show more

“…The following genes were analyzed for expression: Cd36, Fabp3, Lipe, Fasn, and Crat. To isolate RNA from mouse liver and white and red gastrocnemius muscle, tissues were homogenized in 3-5 mL Trizol as previously described [35] and quantified using a Nanodrop (ThermoFisher Scientific, Waltham, MA, USA). For qPCR measurement of RNA transcripts, 1 µg of RNA was reverse-transcribed to cDNA.…”

“…Aligning meal times with the circadian rhythms by time-restricted feeding in animal models can also modulate PGC1α activity and mitochondrial biogenesis. [ 323 , 349 , 350 , 351 , 352 , 353 ]. Additionally, various polyphenolic compounds contribute to mitochondrial biogenesis via PGC1α activation, which is mediated via AMPK-SIRT1 activation [ 354 , 355 ].…”

“…TRF is a new intermittent restriction dietary pattern, which suggests that food is available only during the active phase without altering the nutritional composition of food. The defined period can vary from 8 to 12 h, which is enough to ensure sufficient calorie intake compared to ad libitum feeding ( 14 , 15 ). Compared to non-restricted diets, TRF has great advantages in preventing obesity, lowering blood pressure, and improving glucose intolerance in a high-fat diet (HFD)–induced obesity mouse model without changing daily caloric intake between TRF-treated and ad libitum –fed mice ( 16 ).…”
