Effects of finishing/polishing time on surface characteristics of tooth‐coloured restoratives

Abstract: This study compared the effects of immediate and delayed finishing/polishing procedures on the surface characteristics (surface roughness and hardness) of tooth-coloured restoratives including a microfilled, a heavily filled and a polyacid-modified composite resin and a resin-modified glass-ionomer cement. Eighty-four specimen discs were made for each material; the first 12 were used as controls and the remaining 72 specimens were randomly divided into two equal groups. The first group was finished/polished im… Show more

“…26,35 In this experiment, all the evaluations were conducted after one-year storage in saline at 37°C for all specimens. In this way, the maturity of the composites was common at the evaluation time, and any differences in hardness could be attributed to the effects of the polishing procedures at both intervals.…”

“…23 Different methods can be used for restorations' finishing and polishing; 21 however, there is a lack of consensus as to which material and technique provides the smoothest surfaces for composites, 15,[24][25] and little research has been conducted on the influence of delay in polishing on surface roughness, hardness and the marginal sealing of composite restorations. 15,[26][27][28] Still, there are no publications that address the effect of aging processes or long-term storage related to these properties.…”

“…However, properly contoured restorations are seldom achieved without the need to remove excess material. [35][36][37] Specifically, in Class V restorations, finishing and polishing procedures frequently lead to iatrogenic damage to the soft and hard tissues.…”
