“…The enrichment of underground parts of plants, such as the roots of carrots or potato tubers with I or Se, is possible because of the transportation of these elements through the phloem from the leaves to underground tissues. This effect was demonstrated in studies on biofortification with I in the cultivation of carrots (Signore et al, 2018) and potatoes (Ledwożyw-Smoleń et al, 2020), as well as in research on biofortification with Se in carrots (Oliveira et al, 2018) and potatoes (Zhang et al, 2019). There are no data on whether the foliar application of I and Se simultaneously will enrich carrot roots.…”

“…The studies of Rodrigo et al (2013) and Ekanayake et al (2015) describe the recovery efficiency of Se in barley and lentil grains that was four times higher at selenate foliar application than at selenite foliar application. Other experiments with potatoes point to the fact that the later selenium foliar application (in tuber enlargement phase) resulted in the increased total concentration of Se in tuber (Zhang et al 2019). Relatively few studies are aimed at the Se effect on (Tobiasz et al 2014).…”

“…Thus, through agronomic biofortification it is possible to increase the intake of Se by humans, due to the Se enrichment of main food crops such as rice [14,[17][18][19] wheat [2,20] potato [21] and lettuce [16], for example. Selenium is also beneficial in defending plants against oxidative stress caused by oxygen radicals produced by internal metabolic or external factors [22] also delaying the effects of senescence at appropriate levels.…”
